For the 2015 Christmas festive season, Selfridges commissioned United Visaul Artists to propose something special to decorate their façade.
United Visual Artists (UVA) proposed a hanging video wall made from LED strips which were programmed to create “A Distant Light”. To achieve the artists desired visual effect, the structure supporting the 4m diameter wall on to the Grade 2 listed structure had to be slender, almost giving the piece a floating effect. Packman Lucas designed a supporting system which integrated steel ties into the aesthetics of the wall which then transferred the loads back to the building via fabricated steel brackets.
Due to the Central London location in peak shopping season, the installation of the piece had to be undertaken in one night. Working with the fabricators and riggers we devised a detailed lifting sequence which kept the road closure to a minimum and allowed the installation to be successfully completed.
