• Architect: Heatherwick Studio
  • Location: St Pauls, Central London
  • Client: Paternoster Developments Ltd

The Paternoster Development happened over a number of years and was a highly controversial scheme as it is situated alongside St Pauls Cathedral.

The main electricity substation that serves the development is positioned below ground in part of the general piazza and requires a significant volume of air to pass through the cooling vanes in order for the equipment to function. The brief was to design a 'cooling tower' that would create the necessary 'stack effect' and yet have a street presence that would complement the development.

The design evolved as a series of paper folding exercises and culminated in the design you see here - 6mm stainless steel 'Origami'.
